Jihadist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS love picking through religious texts like a bad buffet—grabbing only the spiciest quotes to justify their politics. When they want to justify hating or attacking Jewish people, their absolute favorite verses to pull out of context are Surah 2:65 and Surah 5:60. Compare these with Bible verses Romans 2:28-32

These passages mention a historical story where people who broke the Sabbath were punished by being turned into "despicable apes" (and in 5:60, swine).

Instead of reading this as a localized moral lesson from thousands of years ago, extremist propagandists turn it into a modern weaponized meme.

How Extremists Remix the Verses

Extremist speeches and internet propaganda generally spin these verses using three main tactics:

  • The Ultimate Insult: Radical clerics literally call Jewish people "descendants of apes and pigs." It’s basic Dehumanization 101: if you convince your followers the enemy isn't fully human, it makes violence a whole lot easier to sell.

  • Making Conflict Eternal: By claiming God personally cursed an entire group of people forever, extremists try to argue that peace treaties are impossible. They frame a complex, modern territorial conflict as an unchangeable cosmic battle.

  • Stacking Conspiracy Theories: They take the "cursed" imagery from 5:60 and mix it with modern antisemitic tropes (like secret world domination) to pretend they are fighting a giant evil mastermind.

Mainstream Islam vs. The Extremist Cut-and-Paste

Unsurprisingly, mainstream Islamic scholars look at the extremists' reading of these texts and shake their heads. The real theological context tells a completely different story.

Who was this about?

A specific, ancient group of Sabbath-breakers who broke a covenant.

Every Jewish (and Christian?) person on Earth, forever.

What actually happened?

Scholars debate if it was a literal transformation or a metaphor for moral corruption.

Treated as literal, inherited DNA.

Can you inherit it?

No. Traditional Hadiths state those transformed people died out without having kids.

Claimed as a direct genetic lineage ("sons of apes").

Why is it in the text?

A warning against hypocrisy and breaking your promises to God.

A green light to hate and attack people today.

Why This Matters Today

Counter-terrorism experts monitor these specific phrases because they act as early warning signs for radicalization.

  • Charters and Sermons: Group manifestos (like the original 1988 Hamas charter) and broadcasted speeches frequently drop these references to hype up their base.

  • Online Propaganda: Memes, Telegram channels, and recruitment videos rely on these quick, dehumanizing labels to make violence seem religiously approved.

  • The Global Backlash: Whenever political figures drop these ancient insults in modern speeches, mainstream Muslim leaders and global scholars call them out—not just for spreading antisemitism, but for completely wrecking the actual theology of the Quran.
