Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) is a Madinan surah, meaning it was revealed after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to the city of Madinah(Medina). It is the first surah revealed in this new period and marks the transition from building individual faith in Makkah (Mecca) to building a community in Madinah (Medina).
